Malhotra scores twice as 11 different players get on scoresheet for Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes continued their hot play as they got scoring from multiple lines while defeating the Ottawa Senators, 6-3 on Saturday afternoon in front of 11,458 at the PNC Arena.

It was the third win in a row for the Hurricanes, who have now won four of their last five, and nine of their last 12 games.

Manny Malhotra scored twice, both times on pretty feeds from Nathan Gerbe, to lead a balanced Carolina attack in the win.

Gerbe got the scoring started at 10:30 in the opening period with a shot from a tight angle along the goal line which somehow bounced in the net off of goalie Robin Lehner's pads.

The first period ended quietly, 1-0, but the second period would be a wild one for both teams.

At 6:05 into the second, Alexander Semin made a nice play in his own end with some fancy stickhandling, and then rifled a long pass to Eric Staal, who was breaking into the clear at the Ottawa blueline.  The pass hit Staal in stride and the captain beat Lehner five hole to make it 2-0, home team.

Just 32 seconds later, Gerbe saucered a pass to Malhotra, who was able to get his stick on it to knock it past the Ottawa goalie.  With the score 3-0, the Carolina crowd was rocking, but the scoring was far from over.

A few minutes after that, Andrej Sekera put on a skating display in the Senators' zone as he was circling around, looking for an open teammate to pass to.  The defenseman finally found one and zipped the puck to Riley Nash, who was wide open and seemed to have all kinds of time.  Nash settled the puck, made a phone call for some pizza, and then picked a corner to make it 4-0, Canes.

The Sens did not give up though and Kyle Turris would score twice, once shorthanded, to make it 4-2.  But Tuomo Ruutu would score his first goal in what seemed like forever, to make it 5-2, with just 33 seconds left in the wild period.

Then just 10 seconds after the Ruutu goal, the Sens scored again on a weird play to make it 5-3 going into the final intermission.  In all, seven goals were scored that period, making fans wonder what would happen in the third period.

But Carolina tightened things up and held the Senators scoreless the rest of the way.

Craig Anderson came in net for Ottawa in that last period and did not allow a goal.  Malhotra scored an empty netter when Gerbe unselfishly fed him a pass with a minute and change left in the game to make it, 6-3 Carolina.

Anton Khudobin picked up the win for the home team as he made 23 saves on 26 shots.  After the game, the Russian goalie was asked about having to play so many games in a short period of time.

"If the coach asked me, I would play all 82 games," the goalie said.

Each of the Carolina lines had positive moments and Kirk Muller finally seems to have found good chemistry throughout the lineup.

Eric Staal mentioned that he felt that the first line of Semin, Tlusty, and himself was back to performing like they were last season.  The second line of Jeff Skinner, Elias Lindholm, and Jordan Staal came close many times to scoring.

Skinner hit the post once and Staal, twice.

The Canes will be tested though when they face another red hot team, the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday night at the PNC.  The team will take Sunday off.

Game Notes:

  • Ruutu had a team high five hits to go with his goal.  Muller said that it was his best game of the season.
  • The Canes outshot the Sens 32-26.  Faulk and Sekera had a team best four shots each.
  • Sekera also had three block shots with two assists and was named the game's first star.  He and Faulk each had over 25 minutes of ice time.
  • Manny also won 62% of his faceoffs, a team high.

Storybook endings and goalie fights are defining the 2013-2014 Norfolk Admirals

1 Goalie John Gibson got in to his first fight as professional Friday night against Wilkes Barre-Scranton (Pittsburgh Penguins) goalie (and former Norfolk Admiral/Duck) Jeff Deslauriers.

2 Devante Smith-Pelly scored two goals in a 4-1 routing of the WBS Pens Friday night. His seven game point streak was ended last Sunday in a 4-3 shoot-out loss to the Charlotte Checkers (Carolina Hurricanes), but it was only a hiccup, as "DSP" has seven goals in the last nine games and eleven points across the same span.

3 Goalie Brad Thiessen allowed only three goals on 52 shots (94% Save Percentage) last Sunday vs Charlotte. It was his first game back from a knee injury sustained all the way back on Dec 7. He stopped 22 shots alone in the third period but was scored on three times in the shootout to take a 4-3 loss.

4 Sami Vatanen picked up his third and fourth assists of the season against the Penguins Friday night, in what was his his first game since Nov 16 and only the third this season with Norfolk. Vatanen was assigned to Norfolk earlier this week after a healthy Luca Sbisa returned the Anaheim Ducks' lineup.

5 Jesse Blacker is ranked fifth among defensemen in Game Winning Goals with three, including the only goal in an emotional 1-0 OT win over the Worcester Sharks (San Jose Sharks) last Saturday.

6 Rookie Center Antoine Laganiere scored his sixth goal of the season and his third assist last Sunday in Charlotte. Laganiere has nine points this season.

7 Alex Grant got his seventh goal of the season versus Charlotte last Sunday. Grant sits fifth in scoring for the Admirals with 7goals and 14 assists for 21 points over 37 games.

8 Norfolk has points in five straight games and eight of the last ten, going 6-2-0-2.

9 John Kurtz scored his fourth goal of season against WBS Friday, his ninth point of the season (4G, 5 A)

10 The Admirals Power Play has tallied at least one goal in seven straight games, scoring ten goals on 31 opportunities. This incredible 32% conversion rate is almost double their season average of 17.3% and is better than the Texas Stars (Dallas Stars) league leading season rate of 30.3%.

--Couple of big game stories to throw at you this week, one will get you cheering, one should get you crying. Before I do that, I want to point out some numbers I listed above. The Admirals are 6-2-0-2 in their last ten. They scored on the power play in seven straight games, and have killed off 30 of 35 penalties (85% rate) in the same span, which is on par with their 87.8% season rate, good enough for third in the AHL. I think we'll be singling out January as either the month that got the Admirals in to the playoffs, or as wasted month when they don't get in to the post-season...

--For those who were asking, was told Ricard Rakell is about a week away from coming back. Can't print what the injury is, but told it's not too serious and the Admirals are hopeful he'll be back in time for next weekend. And now, on to the stories.

--Friday night, Norfolk Scope, the visiting Penguins versus the Admirals. Norfolk is up by two goals scored in the first period, and only two minors have been assessed in the game. The second period starts with a more focused Penguins squad starting to carry the play, but the Admirals are getting a few chances in the offensive zone.

The puck goes to the front of the net, and an already sprawled out Jeff Deslauriers is looking desperately for the puck. Admirals tough guy and fourth line grinder Zack Stortini is on the ice and in the middle of the pack in the crease. He sees a loose puck and makes a poke at it just as the referee blows the play dead because he lost sight of the puck. What happens next is just the kindling for a melee that saw 29 penalty minutes handed out between two teams.

"JD" didn't like Stortini's poke at his glove hand and pounced on him, dragging him to the ice and throwing full-on hay-makers down on his head. Through a lot of pushing and shoving, including pulling Deslauriers off of Stortini and seeing a gloved hand trying to hit him, the scrum was broken up. The score-keeper indicated a promotional time-out, and both teams skated towards their benches.

John Gibson, who patiently waited in his crease, skated by JD and gave him a whack on the leg on his way to the Admirals bench. As the time-out ended, Gibson again skated by Deslauriers who was standing in the center ice face-off circle, and gave him another tap. Words were exchanged, and then both goalies dropped their gloves. It was more of a wrestling match than a fight, but Gibson man-handled JD to the ice. As they were pulled apart, Gibson had a huge grin on his face and appeared to be laughing while standing over Deslauriers.

Both goalies were escorted off the ice, but only Deslauriers was tossed. When asked later, Gibson simply explained "He (Stortini) sticks up for us all the time. Anyone, including me, would do the same for him." Coach Yawney also put it very plainly "We have that kind of team."

--Now for the tears. Last Saturday was "Pink in the Rink," an event that sees the Admirals partner up with the local Susan G Komen Foundation to promote awareness of Breast Cancer. In the week before the game, Virginia Pilot Sports Writer Jim Hodges wrote a piece featuring defenseman Jesse Blacker (Link Here). Blacker, who lost his mother to breast cancer when he was just 17 years old, has a pink ribbon tattoo on his right calf to remember his mother, and was sought after that week because of his association with breast cancer, having contributed to a book about the disease over last summer.

The Admirals were playing the second of a back-to-back series against the Worcester Sharks, having battled back in the final moments of the game the night before to force overtime, eventually losing in a shoot-out. Norfolk wanted to win the game on the Pink Ice, not only to get the two points and some revenge for the previous night, but also because Pink in the Rink draws a big crowd and the event is close to the hearts of many players.

With a sell-out crowd in attendance, the Sharks and Admirals battled back and forth through three periods, but neither team could find the back of the net, and so in typical Admirals fashion this season, the game would go to overtime. The overtime period started and Worcester would only manage one shot on goal before taking a penalty a minute and a half in, resulting in a four-on-three power play for the Admirals. Norfolk moved the puck well, but as had been the theme all game, the Sharks goaltender Harri Sateri proved to be up to the challenge, turning away the first shot of the power play. And then it happened.

A shot from the point by Alex Grant gets to the front. Devante Smith-Pelly tried to keep the puck alive, poking at it while laying on the ice. As if watching in slow motion, the puck trickles out to the slot, and Jesse Blacker, manning the other point on that power play, skates quickly towards the puck. Off balance, he launches the puck towards the net, a shot that would find its way behind Sateri and ended the game (Goal Here). Blacker admitted after the game he didn't know the puck went in until after his teammates started cheering.

Admirals fans erupted, Twitter was abuzz with tweets like

Dana DeFilippo, @DanaDeFilippo:"Jesse's mom was with him tonight as he helped punch cancer in the face by scoring the game winning goal in her memory."

Bob Gregory, @Rebelsbeach: "Couldn't have scripted a better ending." And, "Hell no. Disney should be so lucky to have a story like that. Glad we got to see it. Warms the heart, restores faith."

Alex Reed @Alex_Reed_PXP: "Tonight was one of those nights where you are proud to be a sports fan. A great night, for a great cause, & a story-book ending! #thatshockey"

And truly, not even Disney could not have written a better story.

A trip around the Metropolitan Division: Jan. 26

The lead for the Penguins in first place has been improved to 17 points. Carolina, winners of a division-high three-straight, are looking to break through the middle of the pack as they sit in fifth place. Things remain tight as even seventh place Washington sits a mere three points behind the second place Rangers.

1. Pittsburgh Penguins (36-14-2) 74 points

The Penguins won back-to-back games over the Canadiens and Islanders, scoring five or more goals in each game, but their mini-streak came to a close with a 3-0 loss to Dallas on the road on Saturday.

Pittsburgh has managed to stay competitive since Pascal Dupuis was lost to a torn ACL, going 9-4-1 without him.

The Penguins will look to continue to pad their lead before the Olympic break, and that stretch starts by hosting Buffalo on Monday.

The Sabres have the worst goal differential in the Eastern Conference at -47. Conversely, the Penguins have the best in the conference with a +40.

After the duel with Buffalo, the Penguins will travel out west to take on the Kings and Coyotes to round out the week.

Pittsburgh should like their chances of finishing the pre-Olympic schedule strong- they field three statistical league leaders as of Sunday: Sidney Crosby in points with 72, Matt Niskanen in plus-minus with a +29 and wins from a goaltender with Marc-Andre Fleury who has been victorious in 28 contests.

The Penguins and Sabres will drop the puck at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

2. New York Rangers (27-23-3) 57 points

The Rangers will get a taste of the outdoors this week, as they play two games in Yankee Stadium as part of the 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series.

The Devils and Rangers will square off in the stadium on Sunday for an afternoon affair, and then the Rangers will contend with the Islanders on Wednesday in the same venue.

The Rangers go into the game with the Devils having lost two-straight.

Henrik Lundqvist has been doing his best to keep the Rangers afloat, however. He has held opponents to two or fewer goals in five of his past seven games.

During that hot stretch for Lundqvist, he is 5-2-0 with a 1.43 goals against average and a .953 save percentage.

On Wednesday, the Rangers acquired defenseman Kevin Klein in a swap for fellow blueliner Michael Del Zotto.

In his debut for the blue shirts, Klein was paired with John Moore and logged 15:47 of ice time and registered two blocked shots.

The Rangers and Devils outdoor duel was delayed Sunday due to sun glare, pushing the start time back.

3. Columbus Blue Jackets (26-21-4) 56 points

The Blue Jackets are surging, having won eight of their past 10 games.

Prior to dropping a 5-2 decision to the Sabres Saturday night, Columbus had won eight-straight.

Had it not been for a hot Ryan Miller who stopped 36 of 38 Blue Jackets shots, it could have been nine-straight.

Regardless, the Blue Jackets will travel to Carolina for a Monday night game before beginning a stretch of three-straight at home as they welcome in the Senators, Capitals and Panthers to round out the week.

Ryan Johansen leads all Columbus scorers with 37 points on the season.

The Blue Jackets and Hurricanes will begin play at 7 p.m. Monday.

4. Philadelphia Flyers (25-22-6) 56 points

A 6-1 loss to the Bruins at home on Saturday night means that the Flyers haven't won in regulation in a week, dropping three-straight in regulation and one in overtime since they beat the Islanders 6-4 on home ice.

Perhaps most troubling for Philadelphia is that three of their past four losses have come to division foes, and all four have been Eastern Conference losses.

The Flyers don't see another division foe before the Olympic break. In fact, five of their six games before the break come against Western Conference foes.

The Flyers will continue to look for production from Claude Giroux who has a team-high 47 points.

Philadelphia will host the Redwings on Tuesday before traveling to Anaheim and San Jose on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

The Flyers and Red Wings begin play at 7 p.m.

5. Carolina Hurricanes (23-19-9) 55 points

After a 6-3 thumping of the Senators at home, the Hurricanes have won three-straight- the longest current streak in the division.

Carolina's game against the Flyers this week was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was changed to Wednesday due to snow, resulting in a road back-to-back that the Hurricanes handled well.

The Hurricanes knocked off the Flyers and Sabres before finishing off the week by dropping Ottawa.

Manny Malhotra and Nathan Gerbe both had three-point nights in the win on Saturday.

Anton Khudobin improved his season record to 10-3-0 with the win. He stopped 23 Senators shots in the win.

This week, the Hurricanes have a back-to-back starting with a home game against the Blue Jackets before traveling to Montreal on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

To close out the week, the Hurricanes host a Friday night duel with the Blues.

The Hurricanes' last four games before the Olympic break are all home games.

Carolina and Columbus start play at 7 p.m. on Monday.

6. New Jersey Devils (22-19-11) 55 points

The Devils begin the week as the Rangers' opponent at Yankee Stadium as they search for their third-straight win.

The Devils defeated the Blues and Capitals in their previous two games, holding both teams to one goal each.

Jacob Josefson returns to the lineup for the game against the Rangers, after missing 15 games with injury. He is expected to join the top line.

Jaromir Jagr has a four-game point streak and leads the Devils with 42 points.

Peter Harrold has been practicing despite a foot injury, but remains on injured reserve.

After the outdoor game, the Devils will embark on a three-game road trip that brings them to St. Louis, Dallas and Nashville in a four-day span.

7. Washington Capitals (23-21-8) 54 points

Prior to blanking the Canadiens 5-0 on the road on Saturday night, the Capitals had not notched a win in seven-straight games.

During that stretch, the Capitals did pick up an extra point by taking the Sabres and Sharks to a shootout.

However, the woeful stretch also included 5-1, 4-1 and 2-1 losses to division foes, Columbus, New York Rangers and New Jersey.

Now, Washington will look to finish up a five-game road trip in positive fashion as they travel to Buffalo before a back-to-back in Columbus and Detroit.

Braden Holtby's 21-save shutout against Montreal marked his first victory since Dec. 7.

The Blue Jackets will next play in Buffalo, slated for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop on Tuesday.

8. New York Islanders (21-25-8) 50 points

The Islanders have compiled a 6-3-1 record in their past 10 games as they aim to get out of the division cellar.

Their most recent loss came at home in a shootout on Saturday night against the Blues.

Prior to that game, the Islanders were handled by the Penguins, but were coming off back-to-back wins over the Flyers and Rangers.

This week, the Islanders will host Boston before playing the Rangers in Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. To close out the week, they will have a conventional road game with the Rangers on Friday night.

John Tavares' 64 points ranks him second in the league behind only Crosby.

A pivotal watershed game of consequence between the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets tonight in Raleigh.

Carolina Hurricanes vs Columbus Blue Jackets

TV - Fox Sports Carolinas
Radio - 99.9 The Fan

SB Nation Rival Blog: The Cannon (@cbjcannon)

Hurricanes Record: 23-19-9 (55 pts.)
Blue Jackets Record: 26-21-4 (56 pts.)

The Hurricanes have amassed an impressive 8-3-0 record to start 2014, including three straight wins, landing them in the unenviable position of fifth in the Metropolitan Division with 55 points and 10th in the Eastern Conference, a spot which an old boss of mine used to refer to as the "mushy middle." They are in good company as one of seven teams in the conference within three points of each other in the battle to keep playing hockey past mid-April.

Six games remain between now and the Olympic break:

1/27 Columbus - 56 pts, 3rd Metro, 8th East Conf, 8-2-0 last 10 gms
1/28 Montreal - 59 pts, 4th Atlantic, 5th East Conf, 3-6-1 last 10 gms
1/31 St. Louis - 75 pts, 2nd Central, 3rd West Conf, 6-4-0 last 10 gms
2/4 Winnipeg - 55 pts, 7th Central, 11th West Conf, 6-4-0 last 10 gms
2/7 Florida - 49 pts, 7th Atlantic, 15th East Conf, 5-4-1 last 10 gms
2/8 Montreal - 59 pts, 4th Atlantic, 5th East Conf, 3-6-1 last 10 gms

As it stands today, the cut line for the playoffs is around 90 points. In order for the Hurricanes to go into the Olympic break at a pace that gets them to 90 points, they need eight points out of the twelve available from the above games. Few of the match-ups favor the Canes when viewed head-to-head. Only one game is against an opponent that has fewer points. Only two games are against opponents that are currently ranked lower in league standings. Only one game is against a rival that offers a direct points swing within the division: tonight's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Canes haven't beaten the Blue Jackets in their last eight tries, and those tries have been over the course of eight years, the last win coming in Raleigh on December 15, 2005. Their best chance came on December 23rd when they were within five minutes of victory until the Blue Jackets scored two goals in the waning minutes for a 4-3 regulation win. They then went on to shut out the Hurricanes in Columbus on January 10 by a 3-0 score. They'll play twice more after tonight to wrap up their season series.

The Blue Jackets are believing in themselves, and right now they have one of the hottest records in the NHL, on a franchise record-setting eight-game winning streak before coming back down to earth with a 5-2 loss to the Sabres in Buffalo on Saturday night. They are a big, hard-working team that grinds down their opponents, obviously one that the Hurricanes have struggled to solve but must do so if they are to be successful in the division and in their playoff quest.

Though in net Saturday night before getting pulled early after giving up three goals on ten shots, goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky has been key to the recent success, in net for all the games in the winning streak, and he is reported to get the start again tonight. Bob is 5-1-0 with a 1.67 GAA and a shutout in his six career appearances against the Hurricanes.

The Blue Jackets had to play Saturday's game against Buffalo with only five defensemen. David Savard became ill and was unable to play, and Cody Goloubef was unable to join the team due to travel issues after being called up from AHL Springfield Saturday. He'll likely be in the lineup tonight, although Tim Erixon was called up yesterday and could also be an option. Blake Comeau, out since January 9 with a knee injury, was activated from IR over the weekend and traveled with the team. In anticipation of Comeau's return, the Jackets reassigned Cody Bass to Springfield after Saturday's game.

Jared Boll (ankle) remains on injured reserve, as does Marian Gaborik (clavicle), although he has begun skating again.

Projected lines:

Nick Foligno - Ryan Johansen - R. J. Umberger
Boone Jenner - Artem Anisimov - Nathan Horton
Matt Calvert - Brandon Dubinsky - Cam Atkinson
Derek MacKenzie - Mark Letestu - Corey Tropp

Fedor Tyutin - Jack Johnson
Ryan Murray - James Wisniewski
Nikita Nikitin - Cody Goloubef

Sergei Bobrovsky
Curtis McElhinney

The Hurricanes didn't practice yesterday, so as far as line-up changes are concerned, there won't be any news until after today's morning skate. With the success of the lines in Saturday's win, especially with the forward depth, few changes are anticipated unless Patrick Dwyer (day-to-day, lower body) is ready to return. Brett Bellemore has been a healthy scratch on defense for the last several days, and with back-to-back games (the Canes will fly to Montreal after tonight's game to take on the Canadiens tomorrow) he may see action.

Riding point streaks going into tonight's game are Eric Staal (5 games), Alexander Semin (5 games), Andrej Sekera (3 games), Tuomo Ruutu (2 games) and Mike Komisarek (2 games). Staal, Semin, and Jiri Tlusty have combined for 20 points in their last five games. Andrej Sekera has a career high 30 points (8g, 20a) this season and has six points (1g, 5a) in his last three games. Jordan Staal hits the 100-game mark as a Hurricane tonight.

Projected lines:

Jiri Tlusty - Eric Staal - Alexander Semin
Jeff Skinner - Jordan Staal - Elias Lindholm
Nathan Gerbe - Manny Malhotra - Drayson Bowman
Tuomo Ruutu - Riley Nash - Radek Dvorak

Andrej Sekera - Justin Faulk
Ron Hainsey - John-Michael Liles
Mike Komiarek - Jay Harrison
Brett Bellemore

Anton Khudobin

Tonight is Public Safety Appreciation Night in the arena, and there is a pre-game event on the South Plaza featuring vehicles and equipment from the public safety sector on display. The Canes will be in their alternate black jerseys. We'll have the game thread ready to roll by 6:30 pm. See you at the rink.

Welp, The Streak is over. In some ways, that can be a good thing. The pressure's off. But, there's no time to reflect. The schedule moves forward in Raleigh tonight against the suddenly-hot-again Canes.

Well, we all knew the winning streak had to end sometime, but it stings to have lost to the worst team in the league, for sure. That said, there were many positive take-aways from the game, in terms of the raw numbers. When your goalie has an off night and the other goalie plays like the Olympic MVP he is/was, well, that right there tips the scales.

At any rate, the Jackets get a chance to wipe that loss away as they travel to Raleigh for a rare (of late) road game, the front-end of a back-to-back that concludes tomorrow night back at home. The Jackets have had the Canes' number over the past several seasons, but that means little going into tonight's game. The Jackets will have some more roster flux, as David Savard is still unable to go. Cody Goloubef gets the start on the third pairing tonight.

Likewise, Blake Comeau is back off of IR, but it not going to play tonight. Look for him tomorrow vs. Ottawa.

It looks like Sergei Bobrovsky will get a chance to redeem himself tonight, as he is getting the work as the starter at the morning skate.

The Canes have been playing well, winning three straight and seven of 10 after a brutal five game winless stretch. They've gotten Eric Staal back and are scoring some goals, including 14 during their three-game winning streak. They're creeping back up the Metro standings, sitting one point behind Philly and Columbus. So, tonight's game becomes one of those huge, division four-pointers.

For Columbus, honestly, if they play the way they did for the most part against Buffalo, and get their "normal" expected goaltending, I like their chances of starting a new streak. Hopefully no doubt has crept in after the loss on Saturday.

Game 52 Recap: Through The Fingers

After holding a 2-0 lead for the majority of the game, the Blue Jackets allowed three consecutive goals to hand the game right back to the Carolina Hurricanes, costing them third place in the division.

When the Blue Jackets roared out to a 2-0 lead in the first period over the Hurricanes in the opening minutes of play, you could be blamed for thinking this game was on the same trajectory as the last two wins against Carolina.

Fedor Tyutin started things working with a hard shot on Anton Khudobin, which Derek MacKenzie was in perfect position to clean up on the rebound for his third goal in the last three games.

On the following shift, the Johansen line carried the puck right back into the Carolina zone, and R.J. Umberger would benefit from another gorgeous pass from #19 right in front of the net, slamming it home and giving the team a 2-0 lead on just five shots...at which point, well, things sort of stopped.

Columbus would only put two more shots on net for the remainder of the period, while the Canes would tie the shot clock, several of them on a late period power play that was fortunately unable to connect.

The Jackets had a few chances in the second period, including a glorious crossbar by Nick Foligno while Khudobin was completely out of position, but the Canes started pushing in force, and Sergei Bobrovsky had to keep this team in the game after getting hammered with 17 more shots in the period.

The 2-0 lead lasted halfway through the final frame, and a fan could be forgiven for thinking that perhaps Bob might just slip this one out the door, but things changed abruptly when Alexander Semin broke into the Columbus zone. The defenders on the ice collapsed around him in an attempt to take the puck away, but unfortunately that left Eric Staal completely undefended when Semin slipped a pass through the traffic. Staal walked in and snapped a quick shot past Bobrovsky, and the Carolina crowd that had been silenced all night erupted into cheers.

Those cheers got louder a minute later when Staal walked to the net again, this time shooting the puck at the net, and unfortunately it took a bad deflection off of Mark Letestu's stick and tucked in under the crossbar.

There was a sense of painful inevitability when Jordan Staal went end to end and slipped a shot through Bob's five hole as he attempted to square up, giving the Canes a lead and leaving the Jackets shell-shocked.

There were some attempts at a counterattack, but the desperation and scoring touch that had characterized this club for most of the last month wasn't found tonight, and a series of miscues whittled away opportunities, the worst being a point blank rebound opportunity for Artem Anisimov when he had taken his stick off of the ice, or perhaps when the Jackets finally pulled Bob for an extra skater after Jack Johnson worked his way deep into the Hurricane zone...and then threw the puck back into open space rather than at the net, where it would sail back into the neutral zone and cost his team perhaps their last real chance to get this game back into control.

Final Score - Hurricanes 3 - Jackets 2

Standard Bearers:

  • Fourth Line Heroics - The Jackets' fourth line has been one of the driving forces all month, and once again did not disappoint.
  • Ryan Johansen - His line had a pretty solid game, all things considered, but Johansen in particular seemed to give the Hurricanes fits. He had a couple of posts, but sadly couldn't find the back of the net.
  • Jackets Fans - In addition to the significant crowds at the team's CBJBWW game watching party, there was a decent sized contingent of Jackets fans behind the team's bench. Nice job!
  • New Hamster Song - If they have to overplay the Kia commercials, at least it's a catchier tune.

Bottom of the Barrel:

Ugh. Um. Can I just say "Yes"? From the decision to go into Prevent defense at the 10 minute mark of the first period to a frustrating batch of bad decisions with the puck, the officials swallowing their whistles despite some pretty blatant Carolina fouls, to a pretty soft goal allowed by Bob on the go-ahead, to the fact that this game could have given them a solid cushion, and now they're back scrapping with the rest of the pack...if it had come at a different time, I think it'd be easy to shrug it off as a hard luck game, but right after the loss to Buffalo, the stings and arrows feel that much worse.

With the loss, the Jackets slip down to 9th in the East, 1 point behind the Red Wings for the final wild card. The good news is that a win tomorrow night against Ottawa would pop them right back into third place. The bad news is that the team is going to have to fly home tonight with this loss in their heads, and face a Senators team that's rested and waiting for them.

With six games left before the Olympic break, the Jackets have still won eight of their last ten games...but after tonight, they need to find some sparks before the long break.

Eric Staal scores twice and Jordan nets the game-winner as Carolina tops Columbus

If you can say one thing about the Carolina Hurricanes, it's that they do not give up.  They have shown it time and again so far this season and they came from behind again on Monday night, this time after trailing 2-0 to the Columbus Blue Jackets, as they scored three times in the third period to defeat the visitors, 3-2 in front of 13,641 at the PNC Arena.

Eric Staal scored two times within a minute and his brother Jordan, scored the eventual game-winner to propel the Hurricanes to their fourth straight win and 10th in their last 13 games.

The oldest Staal has been red hot of late and now has five goals and nine assists for 14 points in his last nine games played.

Coach Kirk Muller said that the captain was trying to fire up his team on the bench early in the third period.  They felt like they owed the Jackets something after being shutout one game and blowing a two goal lead another time to them, earlier this season.

In fact, they had not beaten Columbus since the 2005 season.

This game was another one where the home team got off to a slow start.  Just 2:42 into the game, they found themselves down 2-0 and the Blue Jackets were buzzng in the Carolina end.  Anton Khudobin had to make save after save just to keep the game within reach.

But later in the period, Carolina picked up some momentum, even if they didn't score.  In the second period they outshot Columbus 17-9, but still could not solve Sergei Bobrovsky, who had shut this team out for five straight periods.

It seemed that whenever the Hurricanes did get a good chance, something happened to mess it up, but still they did not give up.

At 11:18 into the third, the oldest Staal picked up a loose puck after Alexander Semin was trying to get something going.  The defense collapsed on Semin, leaving Staal open, and he beat Bobrovsky with a quick shot to get the home team on the board.

Just a minute later, Jiri Tlusty won a battle along the boards and took the puck behind the net.  He passed it to Staal who was cutting in front and the captain scored again to tie the game as the crowd went wild.

Less then two minutes later, Jordan Staal took the puck down the middle and tried to fake out a defenseman while flipping the puck with his backhand.  Staal landed on his back but the puck bounced in and with a great effort and a little luck, the home team had the lead.

Khudobin needed to make a couple more tough saves later on to preserve the win.  The goalie made 22 saves on 24 shots for the game and extended his record to 11-3-0 while maintaining an excellent save percentage of .926.

The win moves the Hurricanes into sole possession of third place in the Metropolitan Division.  There is no rest though as they traveled immediately after the game to Montreal, where they will battle the Habs on Tuesday night.

Game Notes:

  • The Canes outshot Columbus 35-24.  Semin led the way with five and Jeff Skinner was next with four.
  • The team was credited with 28 hits led by Jay Harrison with five.
  • Manny Malhotra had a game high 64% winning percentage in the faceoff circle.
  • Andrej Sekera played a team high 24:34 of ice time and also had a team high four blocked shots.

2013-14 Game 53: Montreal Canadiens vs. Carolina Hurricanes

After the most pathetic performance on home ice in available memory, the Habs take on a team they blew a 3 goal lead to in their last meeting.

The Montreal Canadiens' poor play isn't a secret anymore.

The Habs have been in choppy waters for a couple of months now, but Saturday night's debacle at the Bell Centre blew the lid off any doubts that the Habs were in more than a rut. The stats from that horrific affair have been played out out so many times in the following days that there's no need to repeat them. The Canadiens embarrassed themselves, and now they're left to try to pick themselves up.

Their opponents tonight, the Carolina Hurricanes, are in some ways the poster boys from the Habs recent stretch of poor work. The Habs, third in their division and fourth in the conference, not to mention eight points above the nearest non-playoff challenger, headed to Raleigh for a New Year's Eve clash with the 'canes.

Montreal earned a 3-0 lead by the midway point of the second period, and held it going into the second intermission. Carolina pounced almost immediately after the break, however, taking advantage of a flurry of early powerplays to jump in front 4-3. The Canadiens would salvage a single point when a P.K. Subban goal tied the game late, but the Habs would ultimately fall when Alexander Semin scored in overtime.

The game, on it's own, was frustrating. In the context of the inconsistency the Habs had displayed going in, it was concerning. In the context of what has unfolded since that game, it was symbolic.

The Canadiens have broken down, and have been mauled in four consecutive games. Their season has gone from promising, to inconsistent, to a disaster. Their once formidable advantage in the playoff race has evaporated, as the Habs are now only three points (and a game in hand) away from falling out of the playoffs. With the Bruins on the horizon, the time is now to collect a critical two points.

Just like last time out, the Hurricanes are still a middle-of-the-road squad that the Habs should be able to beat. Taking advantage of a deep top six, the Hurricanes have reunited their erstwhile top line of Eric Staal, Jiri Tlusty, and Semin. In their last six games, the trio has gone off for a combined twenty points, making them a difficult challenge for P.K. Subban and whoever becomes the newest member of Montreal's currently non-existent top pair.

Graduating to the second line is youngster Elias Lindholm, who completes a line with Jordan Staal and Jeff Skinner. While that line hasn't offered much offence lately, the talented and versatile group has the potential to strike, especially against Montreal's recently brutal defence corps. In fact, anyone who watched the Habs blow up against the Hurricanes at the end of 2013 will recall that Skinner is more than capable of a goal or two.

Thankfully, for Montreal fans, the bottom of Carolina's forward squad is weak, which should offer the Habs an advantage. Michel Therrien has had difficulty getting goals out of any of his lines, but in theory, it should be almost impossible to lineup a bottom sixer weaker than what the Hurricanes can ice. Of course, theory and reality have proven to be two very different things in recent Habs history.

The Canadiens are catching them less than 24 hours after facing off against Columbus Blue Jackets, which should be another advantage. The Habs may also be able to break the Hurricanes unremarkable defencemen, where a newly emancipated John-Michael Liles is among the top four.

In spite of all that's transpired, there's no reason to look at tonight's matchup with a negative attitude. With a half decent effort, two hours and thirty minutes of welcome respite from this weary drama shouldn't be too much to ask. The Habs could come away with two points in the standings, and a little shred of hope that the playoffs might lie in the future.

With more of the same, the Habs will get stomped, and the City of Montreal will be one night closer to the end of Michel Therrien's miserable tenure. Montreal is going to win tonight, because they can't lose.

Facing another mediocre team, can the Habs scrape together a decent game and keep their name in the playoff race?

Hurricanes Record: 24-19-9 (57 pts.)
Canadiens Record: 27-20-5 (59 pts.)

The Canes played a hard fought game against the Columbus Blue Jackets last night, fighting poor ice conditions and an early two goal deficit.  Eric Staal came up big in the third period with two goals one minute apart to tie the game up before Jordan Staal added what would become the game winner just a short time later.  With that win the Canes jumped in to third place in the Metropolitan division and in to playoff position.

This being an Olympic year the Canes were rewarded for their victory with a quick flight to Montreal and a game tonight against the Canadiens.  The Canes are traveling in to Quebec to take on a Canadiens team that has lost four straight games.  This will by no means be an easy contest.  The Canes are not "catching the Habs at the right time" as the saying goes.  After an 0-5 loss to the Caps Saturday the Habs had a players only meeting.  Since then they've been resting and stewing, waiting for the Canes to come to town tonight.  There is no doubt that the Habs will look to give the Canes their best shot and take advantage of the Canes having played last night.

This will be the first meeting between the two teams since New Year's Eve.  Caniacs will remember that as one of the most exciting games of the season.  Montreal took a 3-0 lead in to the third on goals from Lars Eller and Max Pacioretty (2) before Jeff Skinner scored two goals and Eric Staal tied the game just over 4 minutes in to the third.  The game would head to overtime tied at four before Alexander Semin scored 3:27 in to overtime to give the Canes a big win.  That game was the start of the Canes current hot streak.  Including that game in Montreal the Canes are 10-3, including last nights game win over Columbus.

No word yet on what lines we may see out of Montreal or who may be the starter in net.  The Habs have been tweaking their lines since their last game against Washington.

The Canes keep finding ways to stay hot.  In late December and early January it was Jeff Skinner with the hot hand.  As he cooled off Alexander Semin started to catch fire as did Andrej Sekera who was recently named the third star of the week for the NHL.  After last night it looks the captain Eric Staal is starting to heat up.  Eric has been playing some great hockey of late, racking up lots of points.  But last night, Eric Staal took over the game in the third period, something that Eric has not done a lot so far this season.  When Jordan Staal added a third goal to give the Canes a lead it was a big night for the Staal's and the Canes.

Will Eric Staal continue on his hot streak?  Will another Cane, perhaps the czech Jiri Tlusty, who has been playing some of his best hockey of late, be the hero tonight?  Will Anton Khudobin stay hot or will Justin Peters get a chance to avenge his rough start against Tampa a few games back?

As always the game thread will open 30 minutes before game time.  We look forward to seeing you there.  Go Canes!

With a 2-0 lead, Michel Therrien looks like he's standing on a landmine. His face is completely still and unchanging, hands in his pockets. I wonder how stressed he is right now? Kind of impressive how confident he was in his last press conference compared to tonight.

The Canadiens played an okay period, but not a great one, and are up 2-0 as a result. This team is talented enough to play okay and win games. There are still some problems though, chief among them being the tendency to let teams walk into their zone however often they like.

But 2-0 so whatever. Hopefully they don't blow it.

The Hurricanes are hustling and the Canadiens are not. As a result, they were soundly outplayed in the second period, but several posts and some brilliant saves from Carey Price has kept their solid lead.

But the Habs are playing with fire here, and the Hurricanes know that this is a team you can come back from big deficits against. Increasing the intensity level in the third is a must, as is stopping the obscene overuse of Douglas Murray.

Murray played 15% of the first period, where the Hurricanes held a very slight shot advantage. He played 40% of the second period, where the Habs got pounded in shot attempts. It's not a coincidence.

Canadiens vs Hurricanes Top Six Minutes: Who are these guys?

The Montreal Canadiens went up 3-0 on the Carolina Hurricanes and did not cough up the lead. They were obviously impostors.

  • As I begin to write this, the Canadiens are up 3-0 on the Hurricanes. So, you know. I am writing for a win, which means this game will probably end in a loss. (Leaving that here just because. I may make this a regular feature.)
  • I wonder if the talking heads on TV would still say the same things about the games we're all watching if they could hear themselves like we can hear them.
  • I had promised the Twitters earlier that this would be a post about how much I hate Jeff Skinner since I didn't feel like writing any more articles about how the Habs suck. Well, the Habs won, so I can't really do that.
  • But I really hate that kid, you guys. Jeff Skinner is the Justin Bieber of the NHL, except without the DUI and without the Leafs jersey. What a little shit.
  • You guys should read the game thread for comments from before puck drop/before the first goal. I know this team is not overall doing great, but it's a hilarious pit of despair in there at the beginning, in retrospect. For the record, I also thought that's how the game was going to go.
  • Let us build new shrines to Carey Price on top of the shrines we already had on top of the shrines we already had before that. Priceshrineception.
  • Also do not check the Canadiens Facebook page, all the morons who think Price is a bad goalie or that the losses are his fault congregate there. I recommend hanging out on our page, instead, etc.
  • Obligatory Jiri Tlusty naked picture mention.
  • Kirk Muller's tie gave me a seizure.
  • Holy crap the Bell Centre was playoff loud after that win. Which is sad.
  • Max Pacioretty, is such a perimeter player, he scored that goal from the perimeter of Khudobin's face.
  • Rene Bourque compliment of the night, for JD__: an assist!
  • Fun Anton Khudobin fact: his nickname is Dobby, and he got Dobby from the Harry Potter movies on his goalie mask.
  • Another fun Anton Khudobin fact: he is no longer a Bruin, so he is approximately a billion times more likable.
  • Unsung hero: Lars Eller. Well I don't know if he was sung by you guys or not, but I feel like he went unsung. Such a good player. I will be really angry when they panic trade him.
  • So. This win does not change the fact that Michel Therrien is not a good coach.
  • In the absence of a working Extra Skater page for this game, I turned to MathMan for the numbers, and it's all bad. The Fenwick is bad, the Corsi is bad, and the reason the Corsi is bad is the Habs blocked a lot more even strength shots than the Canes did, which means they weren't generating nothing and the Canes were in their kitchen a lot. Carey Price, etc.
  • However, I swear I saw zone entries! ZONE ENTRIES, YOU GUYS!
  • Your EOTP Three Stars: ALL THE GOAL POSTS.
  • This does not give me too much hope for the Bruins game, because the Boston Bruins could eat the "fragile" Habs for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and an afternoon snack.

Carey Price shuts down Canes

The Carolina Hurricanes visit in third place in the Metro Division was short-lived as they fell behind again but could not come back this time while dropping a contest to the Montreal Canadiens, 3-0 on Tuesday night in Montreal.

The Canes outshot the Habs and played fairly well, considering it was the second game of a back-to-back, as well as their fifth game in seven days.   Anton Khudobin was worked hard in this game, making some wonder why Justin Peters did not get this start.  "Dobby" made 27 saves on 30 shots and has played all but one period since his return from injury, which was 11 games ago.

The Habs took a 2-0 lead in the first period because a bit of loose play in the Carolina end, then lit the lamp again early in the second to complete the scoring.

Carolina generated plenty of chances and hit the post a couple of times in the second, but could not beat Carey Price, who was on top of his game this night.

The Canes have now been out-scored, 43-25 in the first period, a stat they need to change.  They also went 0-3 on the powerplay, although they did generate shots and chances.  The Habs blocked 27 Carolina shots, to help Price's cause.

The Hurricanes will spend the night in Montreal and return home on Wednesday.  Next up will be the Blues at the PNC on Friday night.

Game Notes:

  • The Canes outshot the Habs 36-30 and were led by Nathan Gerbe with four.  Several players had three.  The team took 27 shots that were blocked, 36 shots on goal, and missed the net 12 times for a total of 75 shots attempted.
  • Andrej Sekera played a team high 23:45.
  • The team had a rough night in the faceoff circle only winning 44%.

Canadiens vs Hurricanes recap: A win is a win, but still trending down

After breaking a streak of futility with a shutout win, should fans be hopeful of a turnaround?

Tuesday night's game against the Hurricanes was a confusing one. On the surface, a 3-0 win over a team that's been on a hot streak looks like a statement game after a string of pathetic losses, but digging deeper, the Canadiens were outplayed in every single game situation, until they pushed back in the third period.

Score effects play a major part in being outplayed in the second period, but as you can see in the Fenwick chart, outside of a little push to end the first period and another in the third, Carolina held the edge in play all game long.

So once again, we're back to the Canadiens getting lucky, and Carey Price stealing games. That's better than what we've been watching for the last few weeks, but still not inspiring, and not predictive of a turnaround in this team's fortunes. Eventually, if they want to win, they have to start outplaying teams.

Montreal is currently on a 94 point pace throughout the entire season, but since December 10th, that pace has crashed down to just 82 points, from a previous pace of 104. We've been attempting to drive home over the last two months just how dire the situation is, but the hot streak in November seems to have pulled the wool over the eyes of many fans.

Last week I compared Therrien's 2008-09 Pittsburgh Penguins to this year's Habs, and the results were staggeringly ugly. This is something I want to update on a weekly basis, so I added the games Montreal has played since, and this is what we get:

Therrien_vs_therrien

You might think that the blip out of the down trend is a positive sign, but most of that occurred during blowout games where the Canadiens were playing from behind for almost the entire game. Score effects were a major contributor, so I wouldn't give much weight to it. Being outshot by 20 attempts last night has them back on the downward trend, but to make this a little clearer, let's add trendlines.

Therrien_trend

The green line is showing the predicted trend for this season, while the purple line shows the trend the Penguins were on in 2008-09 under Therrien. As you can see, the green line is a sharper decline, partially because the Canadiens started on a higher note, but the fact is, in order for the Canadiens to catch up to the Penguins when we're using total Corsi differentials, they had to be outshot by a wider margin.

In short, the Titanic is still en route to the iceberg, and no one at the helm is paying attention. Wins like the one against Carolina are going to happen from time to time with a team as talented as the Habs, with a goaltender as good as Carey Price, but unless the approach changes from a coaching staff that believes Douglas Murray is a positive contributor while being outscored 24-4 in 32 games played. Two players in the entire NHL have played as much as Murray has and have a worse goal differential at even strength.

Change must come.

The Hurricanes started the week with a snow delayed game in Philadelphia and ended it in Montreal as Raleigh was getting it's largest accumulation of the season. While the week might have ended on a low note, it was otherwise fantastic.

The Canes started the week 5 points out of the final playoff spot and had to play 5 games in 7 days. Not exactly a recipe for success. But Carolina won the postponed game against the Flyers and then traveled to Buffalo for a back-to-back against the Sabres. While the Canes found themselves down 3 times against the Sabres, they fought back each time and won 5-3. They then fly back to Raleigh for a rescheduled game against the Senators midday Saturday. They won at home and waited for a big contest against Columbus. The Staals came up huge in the 3rd and the Canes yet again found a way to win. They then traveled to Montreal to conclude the week. The rested Habs got up early and Carey Price& the goalpost prevented the Hurricanes from getting on the scoreboard. While it didn't necessarily end well, Carolina currently finds itself 9-4-0 for the month and residing in the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. There is still plenty of work to do, but a good final 4 games before the Olympic break should have Carolina in a good position. Here are the stats for the week of 1/22/14 through 1/28/14.

Who's Hot

  • Andrej Sekera - Sekera was on the "Who's Not" list last week after a rather poor performance against the Lightning, but man did he respond. Sekera had a team high 5 assists and led the team with a +7 rating. He also tied for the team lead with 6 points, was 2nd with 11 blocks and tied for 3rd with 14 shots on goal. To top everything off, he was also named the NHL's 3rd Star of the Week. While the stats reflect his strong week, he really was even better. His skating ability really shined this week and there is nothing like getting the game winner against your former team. The only real negative for Andrej was his 5 on 5 Close possession numbers. Among the team, his 5 on 5 Close numbers were in the lower portion and his All Situations numbers were only above average. But again, overall Sekera's had a very good week and the team seems to do much better when his game is on. If he and his playing partner can continue playing at a high level, this team has a shot at playing beyond the end of the regular season.
  • Alexander Semin - Semin continued his strong play from the week before by contributing 3 goals and 3 assists. He tied for the team lead in goals and points. Was tied for 2nd in assists, +/- and takeaways and was tied 3rd in shots on goal. It's really funny how different this team looks when Semin's first instinct is shooting compared to when he is overthinking everything. Semin's possession numbers were average to above average for the team, but they were below his typical numbers. But the biggest negative for him this week was his team high 6 PIM. While he isn't used a lot on the PK, he is always a threat shorthanded. The Montreal game wasn't Semin's strongest game, so it will be important for him to rediscover that magic from earlier in the week.
  • The Staals - Eric and Jordan had very strong weeks, just like the team needs them to have. Eric tied for the team lead in goals, was tied for 2nd in assists, tied for 3rd in points and tied for 4th in +/-. But Eric also had average to below average possession numbers and also had a team worst 5 giveaways. He also saw a pretty drop off in the faceoff success, dropping almost 20% from the previous week. Jordan's primary stats don't really look that impressive, but he was a real beast with his play. He led the team in takeaways, tied for the team lead in shots and was tied for 3rd in hits. Jordan also finished 1st in 5 of the 6 possession categories (2nd in the other one). Both players really showed their worth to the team this week, in particular the Columbus game. If this is the Staals we see for the 2nd half of the season, this team has a real good shot at making the postseason for the first time since the 08/09 season.

Who's Not

  • Jay Harrison - This really wasn't a week where anybody performed poorly, but some had a better week than others. One person that got some flak from fans was Jay. Some were wondering why he was playing and Brett Bellemore was not. While Harrison is a decent defenseman that can contribute some offensively, he doesn't provide the same things Bellemore does. He finished the week with no points, a -1 rating and 4 PIMs. But the thing that has really stood out to me was Jay's time on ice. The last 2 seasons, he averaged right around 20 minutes a game and was in the lineup in all but 11 games. This year, he has already missed 13 games and his average TOI is down to 15:29. This week, he only averaged 14:45 per game. Harrison hasn't gotten a point since December 6th. While he is on a very friendly contract, does this lack of scoring and reduced TOI mean that Jay Harrison might be expendable? With the trade deadline a month away, I guess we might find out.
  • Radek Dvorak - Dvorak's situation is somewhat similar to Harrison's. It's not that he has been bad, but it's a question of if someone else could fill his position? He was brought in to be a veteran presence on the 4th line and penalty kill. And after the first 2 games, in which he scored 2 goals, the signing looked great. But in the past 23 games, he has only accounted for 2 points and a -3 rating. The team has also added Manny Malhotra, so another veteran playing in more significant situation has also been added. Dvorak's week did include an assist, 8 shots on goal and an Even rating, but he also had 4 PIM's and was near the bottom in possession numbers. For the year, he is one of the worst Canes in possession, around the 40% mark in both Corsi & Fenwick. Could someone within the organization or on the trade market be available for an upgrade to the 4th line RW? I guess we will find out.
  • Jeff Skinner - If you look at the overall numbers, Skinner had a decent to good week. He had 17 shots, a goal, an assist and he possession numbers were near the top of the team. But his December, start of January pace has all but dried up. He only has 1 goal and 1 assist in his last 9 games and the team needs more out of him. Jeff's high expectations are a product of his own success, so like Eric and Alex, he is held to higher standards. His job is to produce points and more importantly, produce goals. Just look at the Canes PP in late December and early January. It was much improved over the rest of the season and that was mainly due to Skinner's shooting ability. Imagine how this week's games could have gone if the PP was even ok? It might have changed the outcome of the Montreal game and could have made the Columbus game much easier. He isn't solely responsible for the PP, but I think everyone can admit he is a vital piece. Again, I'm not saying Skinner was bad, but the team needs more results from him in these next couple of weeks.

Notable Weekly Team Stats

  • The Hurricanes scoring was quite good this week. They averaged 3.40 goals per game, good for 8th in the NHL. Their 17 goals were the 2nd most in the league this week, 1 behind Boston. They also ranked in the top half of the league in goals against with 2.60 goals against per game. That had them 13th in the league.
  • Carolina ranked 7th this week in both shots for and shots against. They averaged 33.6 shots for per game and 26.6 shots against per game.
  • The PK was pretty successful this week, clocking in at 87.5%. They only gave up 8 PK opportunities, which was the 6th lowest for the week. That success rate would rank 2nd in the NHL on the season, so let's hope to keep that up.
  • The Canes possession numbers dropped this week, but they still stayed on the positive side. Their 5 on 5 Corsi For was 52.4% and their 5 on 5 Fenwick For was 51.1%. The issue was that the games were very different, up one game, down the next.
  • Carolina ranked in the top 10 in 3 other categories. They had 100 hits (7th), 60 blocked shots (5th) and 29 takeaways (tied 5th). They finished the week with 33 giveaways (21st) and a -4 in the turnover margin (14th).
  • The faceoffs were average for the Hurricanes this week at 50.7%, 14th in the NHL. Of the guys with over 5 faceoffs; Elias topped the list at 57.1%, Manny was next at 56.9%, followed by Jordan at 55.6%, then Eric at 45.4% and last was Riley at 35.7%.
  • Team Stat of the Week - PP - 7.1% - That's right, 1 conversion in 14 opportunities. If there was 1 thing the Canes could improve that would help them out the most, it's the PP. An average PP would have resulted in at least 1 more goal and who knows how that changes the complexion of a game. Carolina also has the 8th most PP opportunities on the season. If they were better, then maybe teams are more reluctant to commit penalties and allow better scoring chances at even strength. Whatever the case, Kirk Muller was known for his PP, so why can't he fix the Canes PP? Individually, most of the guys have proven to be effective PP guys, so I have to believe the issue is the system. Maybe another piece needs to be added or maybe they need to do something completely different, but something must change.
