Thursday Clips: Jason Karmanos Finds New Home and Other News

Karmanos will head up Penguins analytics, Forslund tells 620 The Buzz that time is of essence for coaching hire, and more

In an interesting development this morning, the Pittsburgh Penguins reported that they hired Jason Karmanos and named him Vice President of Hockey Operations.  Jim Rutherford elaborated a bit more that he would be in charge of analytics for the club.

"I’ve worked with Jason for many years, know him well and know he can make great contributions to our hockey operations department," Rutherford said. "His first priority here will be to re-shape our analytics so that we have all the tools available in our decision-making process throughout the season."

A link to the story is below.  At the end of the article, it also mentions that Jason and his family will be relocating to Pittsburgh.

Karmanos hired

If all is truly hunky-dory between Peter Karmanos and Jim Rutherford, this move is a bit surprising, because the Hurricanes owner fired his son early last season.  The reason for the firing was left as a "personal (family) matter" and reportedly had nothing to do with the younger Karmanos' job performance as Executive Vice President and Assistant General Manager for the Canes.

No replacement was ever hired, as Jason's job tasks were reassigned within the organization.

Is this just the first shot across the bow toward his old boss by Rutherford?  It will be interesting to see who the Pens hire as coach.

-----

Speaking of coach, John Forslund was on 620 The Buzz this morning answering a few questions for Mike and Mark.  Toward the end of the interview, Forslund said that it is getting near crunch time to hire a coach.  When the series is over, four teams will be scrambling and the Hurricanes don't want to lose out on their first choice.

I think Forslund was alluding to the idea that the draft is a key date to have a coaching staff in place, not so much for the draft itself, but because so many key trades are made during this time.  Also with July 1st coming up soon, it would be nice to have a coach's input before missing out on key free agents, or choosing one or more that don't fit with the new coaching philosophy.

NHL general managers met yesterday and one of the primary topics discussed was whether or not the league would adopt a "coach's challenge" rule.  Rutherford was interviewed regarding this as well and said that he doesn't think a new rule will be in place before the next season.

Finally, there is an excellent, in-depth interview recently published with Glen Wesley's son, Josh, who is currently a defenseman for the Plymouth Whalers.  The young Wesley is draft eligible and is projected to be picked by someone, at least in the later stages of the draft, if not earlier.

Putting aside that he is Wesley's son, he fits the criteria in that he plays for Plymouth, so most certainly will be on Carolina's radar.

Canes Country Round Table Volume 7: The UFA Market

We each choose one available UFA that will help the team next season

The Carolina Hurricanes will be dipping into the free agency market this off season, but who will they be targeting?

This week at the round table, we each select one unrestricted free agent that we think will help the team and give the details of the deal.  (We try to be realistic about this).

The question this week is:  Which current UFA should the Hurricanes target this offseason and why should he be a priority?  Explain the terms of the contract you would sign him at.

Cory Lavalette - Editor

One of the things Carolina has been missing from its lineup over the past several years, in my opinion, is a top-notch agitator to take some of the pressure off of the skill players and change the Hurricanes’ reputation to one that's tougher to play against. With that in mind, the team’s top target should be center Steve Ott.

Not only does Ott bring that snarl and grit lacking from the Canes, but he is a capable third or fourth line center who wins faceoffs, fights when necessary, and even can score from time to time. He's not the 20-goal, 40-point player he once was, but he should be able to produce points on a similar level as Riley Nash, but also contribute on special teams.

To further up the ante on the physicality spectrum, Carolina would be wise to target Minnesota defenseman Clayton Stoner. For one, imagine the jersey sales! Secondly, Stoner brings a style similar to pending UFA Brett Bellemore but is a more willing fighter and is known for standing up for his teammates and generally isn't the type to engage in a staged brawl.

It's worthwhile for the Canes to kick the tires on veterans like defenseman Andrei Markov and center Paul Stastny, but both may prove too expensive for GM Ron Francis’ palette. Rangers center Brian Boyle is an option in the bottom six, as is Steve Downie if the team is looking for bite from its depth players.

Brian LeBlanc - Editor

One of the great failings of the Jim Rutherford administration is, with a few exceptions, he always chased after the same types of defensemen: the fabled puck-moving guy best personified in Joni Pitkanen and Joe Corvo.  Having six similar players on the blue line made it relatively easy for opposing teams to gameplan against the Canes, and left the Canes' goaltenders wide open to face a barrage of shots that would be cleaned up by more defensively solid players (Tim Gleason being the notable exception that proves the rule).

The Canes never really replaced Gleason's role on the team following his trade to Toronto, and Ron Francis' first responsibility needs to be finding someone to take that place.  The Florida Panthers' Tom Gilbert fills the role, and he should be the Canes' first target at defenseman.

Gilbert will never be confused with Zdeno Chara, but he more than holds his own.  After a forgettable stint in Minnesota where he was bought out of the final year of his contract, Gilbert signed a bargain-basement deal with the Panthers and was a more than serviceable all-purpose defenseman who was responsible defensively first and foremost while still able to contribute on the offensive end.  Gilbert's usage with the Panthers was actually quite similar to how he was used with the Oilers and Wild; in fact, for each of the last five years, he has outperformed his team average in possession stats while playing against roughly average competition.

Similar to how the Canes deployed Ron Hainsey this past season, Gilbert would fit in nicely alongside either Justin Faulk or Ryan Murphy, allowing the more offensively-minded guys to jump into the play more while still covering the defensive zone.  Gilbert would come (relatively) cheap, would fill a need and would be the kind of under-the-radar signing that paid dividends last year when Rutherford signed Hainsey.  Francis could do worse than signing Gilbert to a three year, $8 million deal.

While there are a couple of interesting UFAs out there this offseason, like a Ryan Callahan, a Paul Stastny, a Matt Niskanen or even a Ales Hemsky.  If I had to choose just one that I believe would work well in Carolina and probably fit in the Hurricanes budget, I would choose defenseman Mark Fayne.

Fayne is a solid right-hand defenseman that can log some minutes, has very good possession numbers and can contribute on the penalty kill.  He has the ability to provide a little bit of offense, but that isn’t a particular strong suit for him.  Over the past 3 seasons (I adjusted the 12/13 season to an 82 game schedule), Fayne has averaged 69 games, 3 goals, 9 assists, 12 points, and Even rating, 53.8% 5-on-5 Corsi in 19:06 TOI/G.  While Fayne might not be a huge impact player that most fantasize about, I think he would fill a need in Carolina’s top 4 and he could be useful in whatever direction the Canes move toward.  He could fit with the existing group and he could be a part of a rebuilding group if that is the direction Carolina goes.

Like I mentioned in my article, I think we could sign him for 4 years, $11.8 million or a $2.95 million cap hit.  But I might be willing to go to 4 years, $13 million or a $3.25 million cap hit, but that would probably be my max and that’s mainly because there are other issues to address.  I really think Mark Fayne would be one of my top UFA targets this offseason if I was Ron Francis.

Brian (C-Leaguer) - Contributor

There are many places where the Canes need to upgrade, and new GM Ron Francis has his hands full.  I, and I may be alone on this, wouldn't be upset if he decided it was time to start over and looked at moving out everyone other than Jeff Skinner, Elias Lindholm, Justin Faulk, Andrej Sekera, Ryan Murphy, and Anton Khudobin.  For the purposes of this question though, I'm going to pick a UFA I would like the Canes to pursue assuming they want to contend this year.  I'm also going to assume that the Canes aren't going to use a buyout, compliance or otherwise.  I say that, because without a buyout the defense is pretty well set, especially if the Canes are able to re-sign Ron Hainsey.  So that leaves us with forwards to look at.

What do the Canes need most from a forward.  Well, first and foremost I would say versatility.  Someone that can play in multiple circumstances, and ideally in multiple roles.  You'd think I was talking about Jussi Jokinen, but I would also say the team needs toughness, and for everything that Jussi Jokinen does, toughness isn't one of those.  The team also needs work ethic.  Kirk Muller tried to stress that when he was here, and the team played well for him when the work ethic was there, but for whatever reason that message didn't seem to stick when it was coming from behind the bench.

For that reason I'm saying that the Hurricanes should pursue Steve Ott for a deal that has a cap hit in the $3.5M range.  I'd prefer a two year deal, but my guess is he will require a three-year deal.  I've put together a roster over at cap geek here:

There is still one spot to fill, and I've re-signed Tlusty.  However, there is over $9M in cap space which leaves the team plenty of room to operate.

Ott will bring the toughness and leadership that the team needs.  He will also help the Canes go three deep at center and allow Lindholm to come along slowly in the league.  The big question will be if the Blues let him get to free agency or if they decide to keep him in the fold.

Bob Wage - Managing Editor

Wouldn't it be nice to make a play for Andrei Markov?  That is who I prefer, but that is but a dream.

There are a number of players who could help the Hurricanes and I agree with the choice of Steve Ott from above.  I also think a reasonable offer should be made for Mason Raymond, but I will stick to the rules and make one choice here.

The man I would go after is Matt Moulson.

Moulson had a disappointing postseason with Minnesota, but this guy has scored a lot of goals in recent years and could definitely give the offense a boost.  He scored 23 goals this season in 75 games, while playing for three different teams.  He had three straight years of 30 goals plus for the Islanders and then 15 in the lockout shortened season.

If he could gain some chemistry with one of the Staal brothers, there is little doubt he could rack up a lot of points again.  Moulson is a top six guy who has been a bit under the radar around the league and is a rare 30 goal scorer who has never earned $4 million plus per year.

He would also help out on the powerplay, something that Carolina is in dire need of.  (Five of his six goals with the Islanders last season were powerplay tallies).

While he is not known to be a physical player, he is usually sound defensively and plays a decent two-way game.

His last contract was a three-year deal paying $9.4 million.  I would offer a two-year contract at $4 to $4.5 per season and see how close we were.  There is little doubt that the Islanders would love to have him back, so the bad news is that a bidding war might ensue and I would not go much higher than that offer.

If we could not sign Moulson, I would kick the tires on Brian Gionta, Mike Cammalleri, and Ales Hemsky.  Each of these guys has seen better days and should be open to a short-term, cheaper contract than what they have signed at in recent years.

The reason for my thinking here is that the Canes need help on the powerplay.  They will not make the playoffs by continually having one of the worst powerplays in the league.

SB Nation 2014 NHL Mock Draft: Canes Pick Brendan Perlini

With Ekblad, Bennett, Reinhold, Draisaitl, Dal Colle, and Virtanen on the board, Canes take the safe pick in Perlini

The annual SB Nation NHL Mock Draft has started and the Carolina Hurricanes are on deck with the 7th pick.

The Panthers selected Aaron Ekblad at number one, then the Sabres took Sam Bennett, and the Oilers went for Leon Draisaitl at number three.  The Flames brought two brothers together with the selection of Sam Reinhart, and the Islanders took Michael Dal Colle with the fifth selection.

The Canucks were next and selected Jake Virtanen with their pick, after which there was a collective grown from the Hurricanes table.

Even though he is currently injured, Virtanen would be perfect for the Canes.  He's fast, tough, physical, and has a great shot.  In addition to that, he has some size and knows how to use it, which the Hurricanes crave.

My mind was made up to pick Virtanen at number seven if he was still there, but since he was gone my mind was churning.  On my list were two possible superstars who were still available in William Nylander and Nickolaj Ehlers, but they are a bit under-sized.  There was a big bruiser still left, Nick Ritchie, and there was another forward with size, Brendan Perlini.

I went with Perlini.

This forward, listed at almost 6'3 and 205 pounds has size of his own and perhaps should even grow a bit more as well as fill out some. But in addition to his size, he has very good speed and an excellent shot.  Perlini finished with 34 goals and 37 assists playing for Niagara of the OHL last year.

Here is what some of the scouting services had to say:

NHL Central Scouting:

He plays an unselfish game moving the puck around and he gets his stick on pucks and arrives on time for chances. He's a good shooter and has a good touch finishing chances."

McKeen's Hockey

Rounding out the top five wasn’t an easy process as several OHLers received consideration including Sault Ste. Marie’s Jared McCann, Guelph’s Robby Fabbri and Sarnia’s Nikolay Goldobin. In the end, Niagara’s Brendan Perlini’s size, intelligence and skating abilities edged out his draft mates. Stamping his place inside the Top 10 early in the season after coming out of the gates hot, Brendan Perlini impressed with a well-balanced puck possession game. He made a living shielding opponents from pucks along the boards and walking off the wall to unleash a deadly shot. Perlini uses his combination of speed and puck skills to back up defenders, and his net drive and hunger for the loose puck speaks volumes of his love for scoring goals. And boy, can this kid score goals. Perlini scored 16 goals with the man advantage tying Aaron Ekblad for the lead among draft eligible skaters in the Ontario league.

Had Perlini showed scouts that he can play a more consistent physical game, he may have moved up the rankings into the top 5. For teams looking to add a sizeable winger with poise and natural scoring instincts, Brendan Perlini will be a hot target.

ISS Hockey - (via My NHL Draft)

  • "Great past month 23 PTS in 11 GP w/ +10 rating. Total package w/ lethal offensive weapons" - Nov. 23rd, 2013
  • The ISS has Perlini at number seven overall, ahead of Virtanen, Ehlers, and Ritchie, (but behind Nylander.)
  • The Hockey Writers (via My NHL Draft)

  • Size and speed– This is the right combination for an NHL winger and at 6’3, 205 lb. with excellent acceleration and quickness, Brendan has it.

  • Skills galore– Long reach, good puck possession, good shot, excellent passer.

  • Finish– Quick release, last minute dangle, down on one knee – what’s not to like!

  • Physicality– Needs to be more consistent in using his body to make things happen in the offensive zone because when he does, good things happen.

  • Draft placement– Latter half of top 10 if he continues to produce at a healthy clip; not likely to drop beyond 15 in any event.

  • Reminds me of– A hybrid combo of Jeff Carter with Max Pacioretty.
Profile from: Eldon MacDonald and Chris Ralph of The Hockey Writers - updated Feb. 27th
  • Future Considerations - (Via My NHL Draft)

Perlini is a lethal combination of speed, puck skills, and hockey sense which allow him to make dynamic plays in all three zones. He plays a high puck possession game and thrives when the puck in on his stick.

While it was very close, Perlini finished sixth with 138 total points, according to the consensus ratings at My NHL Draft.  This report awarded each player a certain number of points, depending upon where the prospect was rated by numerous rating services.  His placement was ahead of Ritchie, Ehlers, Nylander, and Virtanen.

    Consensus Ratings.

Coincidentally, while the forward was born in England, he lists the same hometown as Ron Francis, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

While he needs to work on his defense and use his body a bit more, Brendan Perlini should make fine addition to the future of the Hurricanes and I believe he is a safe pick at this point in the draft.

    Joe Corvo D         2013-2014

Born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1977, Corvo was drafted 83rd overall by the Los Angeles Kings in 1997. He was named top defenseman at the 1997 World Juniors and had a successful college career at Western Michigan University. Corvo made his NHL debut in the 2002-2003 season with the Kings. He signed a four-year deal with Ottawa as a free agent in 2006. He wore #7 during his first stint with the Senators. One of several players whose time in Ottawa ended tumultuously, Corvo was an offensive defenseman who was a member of Ottawa's Stanley Cup Finals run in 2007. He was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes along with Patrick Eaves for Mike Commodore and Cory Stillman on February 11, 2008. However, he would have a second run with the Senators after signing a one-year contract for $900,000 with Ottawa in 2013. Wearing #77, Corvo's 2013-2014 season wasn't successful. While he scored 10 points in 25 games with, he was often a healthy scratch. Scratched for more than two months straight, he was loaned to the Chicago Wolves of the AHL on March 5, 2014, most likely ending his career. In 10 games with the Wolves, he had a goal and four assists.

Ottawa Senators 1st Round Pick Knockout Tournament: Round One

A knockout tournament to determine Ottawa's best-ever first round pick

In preparation for the NHL Draft on June 27-28 in Philadelphia and in part because the Senators don't have a first round pick this year, we've decided to have a knockout tournament to determine Ottawa's best-ever first round pick.

To determine which player should take the honour, there are a lot of different factors to keep in mind:

    • longevity
    • point totals
    • single-season excellence
    • First overall pick? Top-3? Top-5? Top-10? Late rounder?
    • draft expectations
    • Which players did the Senators pass on to draft any given first rounder
    • individual awards/hardware
    • success with the Senators
    • success with other teams
    • championships
    • international success
    • trade returns
    • current potential

To keep things interesting, the above factors aren't ranked. Vote according to what you value most.

Since selecting Alexei Yashin second overall in 1992, the Ottawa Senators have drafted 24 players in the first round of the NHL Draft. Each player has been ranked (1-24) by me (Amelia). Because 24 does not fit knockout brackets well, players 1-8 have been given a bye to the Second Round of voting.

    1st_round_pick_knockout_tournament_bracket_medium

    How does it work?

It's easy. Simply vote for your preferred player in each poll listed below. The poll will close at 11:59 pm on Friday night (June 20). The winning players will advance to the next round of voting on Sunday (June 22).

Tampa Bay is 20-8-3 during the preseason dating back to 2008 and also went 5-2-0 last year.

The following is the schedule of games for the Lightning's 2014 preseason:

As for pre-season games somewhere other than Tampa:

It does seem a bit like a missed opportunity for the Lightning not to try and play at least one pre-season game somewhere outside of Tampa to help grow the brand. This has been a point of discussion for us at Raw Charge. Particularly with the Atlanta Thrashers gone since the summer of 2011, there's a serious vacuum of professional hockey in most of the immediate area surrounding Tampa -- as Cassie McLellan points out, basically from the Everglades up to Carolina Hurricanes country is up for grabs.

While it's important to grow and solidify your base, not playing a game at least in Orlando and continuing fan outreach into Northern Florida seems like a missed opportunity.

As for the regular season schedule, that will reportedly be released this weekend.

Ricky Olczyk joins Mike Vellucci and Brian Tatum on Carolina's management team

The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that Ricky Olczyk had joined their management team under GM, Ron Francis.  Olczyk is a lawyer whose specialty is the CBA and he will help in that area.

Francis said after the press conference that "Ricky is a hard-worker who will bring needed expertise to the organization".

    The team's press release follows:

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 20, 2014

RICKY OLCZYK JOINS HURRICANES MANAGEMENT TEAM

Will serve as assistant general manager alongside Tatum, Vellucci

RALEIGH, NC – Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that Ricky Olczyk has joined the Hurricanes as assistant general manager. Olczyk joins Brian Tatum and Mike Vellucci, who were named assistant general managers in April.

"Ricky brings a wealth of experience to the Hurricanes," said Francis. "His legal expertise with the Collective Bargaining Agreement and other areas of hockey operations will be a great asset to our management team."

Olczyk, 44, comes to Carolina after six seasons as assistant general manager with the Edmonton Oilers. The Chicago, IL, native joined the Oilers’ hockey operations staff in 2007 as director of hockey administration and legal affairs and was Edmonton’s liaison to the NHL regarding all matters pertaining to the CBA. Prior to joining the Oilers, Olczyk ran his own legal consulting firm in Chicago for six years, representing players and advising families on academic and professional goals.

A 1992 graduate of Brown University, Olczyk earned a law degree from Cornell Law School in 1996. While at Brown, he played four seasons of Division I hockey and served as the Bears’ captain during his senior year. Olczyk also captained the United States Under-17 National Team that won the Silver Medal at the 1986 World Cup. He is the younger brother of Eddie Olczyk, U.S. Hockey Hall of Famer and television analyst for the NHL on NBC.

The Bill Peters Era Begins For Hurricanes

Carolina's new coach had his first press conference at the PNC Arena on Friday

One could not help but be impressed after watching the press conference introducing new Carolina Hurricanes coach, Bill Peters.  He was confident, knowledgeable, and well-spoken.

He not only knew the specifics about his new team, he had legit ideas on how to fix things.  Peter's priorities for next season?

    1. To improve the powerplay
    2. To start games better
    3. To win at home

All of these things are easier said than done, but Peters gives the impression he can and will be successful.  And why not? He has had success being a head coach at the college, junior, and AHL levels.

Carolina GM, Ron Francis, confirmed that he signed his new coach to a three year contract. Rod Brind'Amour will be one assistant and they will continue to look for another, hopefully with some extensive experience.

Francis also gave some insight behind the interview process.  It seems that Peters prepared a complete presentation about the Hurricanes for his first interview, which included a detailed powerpoint display.  This guy knows his stuff.

I asked the new coach what type of game we could expect to see his team play and to paraphrase, he responded that they will be a hard skating team who competes all over the ice.  They will work hard on defense and "have fun" on offense.  The "D" will join the rush.  They need to score more goals over what they scored last year, considering the talent on the team.

It seemed like he was indicating a "puck possession", type of style, which would compare to what his mentor, Mike Babcock preaches.

After the presser was over, I asked Peters exactly how he would fix the powerplay, considering the Canes (PP) has been near the bottom of the league for several years now.

"Puck possession is most important," he responded.  You win that faceoff and you gain possession.  If you don't, then you skate back and get the puck and gain the zone, and we will need to work on that.  Breaking the puck into the zone and setting up.  You cannot spend the entire powerplay chasing the puck."

"Next, we have to get players to where they can produce.  The year Eric Staal scored 45 goals and had 55 assists?  He had 16 powerplay goals.  Last year you know how many he had?  (I nodded, yes)  One!  I will sit down with Eric and find out why.  Is he better suited to play along the wall?  Is he better suited in front of the net?  or at the point?  We have to put him in a position to succeed.

And Ryan Murphy?  That kid was a major producer on the powerplay in junior and at the worlds.  We are going to find out, one way or the other, if he can be successful running the powerplay in the NHL. "

So it sounds like Murphy is going to be given a major shot to make next season's team.

Peters seems like a no-nonsense guy when it comes to running his team and said that players will see their ice time reduced if they are not playing up to his standards and compared himself to a "hammer" regarding that.  Francis went even further and said players who do not "buy-in" to the new system, will be shipped out.

I also had the chance to speak to Francis briefly after the press conference and asked him a couple of questions.  Concerning the draft?  They are open to trading either up or down, depending upon what is offered and if it makes sense.

Would they have the room in the budget to look at any of the bigger names in the free agent market? (IE, Brad Richards was bought out today).  He responded no, come July 1st, they most likely will not be looking at adding any big contracts or longer term contracts.

Finally, I asked if they were considering any compliance buyouts before the end of the month.  (Compliance buyouts have to be done by June 30th, but regular buyouts can be completed later.  The difference is, compliance buyouts do not affect a team's salary cap number, a regular buyout does.)  He responded that since the salary cap will not be an issue with them, no, they are not considering a buyout at this time.

When pressed to confirm if Khudobin is considered starting goalie for next season, he responded that coach Peters would make that decision when the time comes.  As General Manager, he would not make that decision or force that decision on his coach.

We will have more info later on this, but for now I will leave this article with a poll.

Are you happy with this hire?

    Blues Release 2014 Preseason Schedule

Hope everyone's ready for a cross-state road trip, as the Blues and Stars meet up in KC at the end of September.

The Blues get seven pre-season games this year against three very familiar opponents. Dallas, Columbus, and Minnesota will each get their turn to square off against the Blues at home and at Scottrade. The Sprint Center in Kansas City will be Scottrade's body double for the match-up on September 27th.

There is one team who will only be visiting Scottrade, and who the Blues will not travel to, and that's the Carolina Hurricanes. Playing them at home gives the Blues three official home games at Scottrade and three road games, as well as an Eastern Conference opponent.

Meaningless hockey is only three months away!

Canes open at home and then have typical travel in October during the State Fair as new schedule is released

The full NHL schedule was released on Sunday and the Carolina Hurricanes are probably pleased with what they see.

There are 16 back-to-back games, down from 20 last season, and 22 of their 41 home games will be played on the weekends, (Friday, Saturday, or Sunday).

After their initial back-to-back against the New York Islanders, the team returns home for a game against Buffalo on October 14.  Then they will travel and will not return to Raleigh until November 1.

The Canes will spend most of the month of March on home ice as 11 of 15 games scheduled will be at the PNC.  They will also finish the season with five straight Saturday home games, which are traditionally best for attendance.

The club will be on the road before and after most holidays as other key dates include a New Year's Eve game at Pittsburgh, games the night before Thanksgiving and night after Thanksgiving in Florida and Pittsburgh, and also road games before and after Christmas.

Coach Bill Peters faces his former team for the first time when the Detroit Red Wings come to town on December 7.

Carolina also will have a nice break during the All Star festivities as they are off from January 19 to 27.

Hurricanes Name Steve Smith as Assistant Coach

Smith worked with defense for Edmonton Oilers over past four years

The Carolina Hurricanes added another piece to their coaching staff with the announcement this afternoon that Steve Smith would be assistant coach.  Smith has been an assistant with the Edmonton Oilers for the past fours years.

Smith joins Bill Peters and Rod Brind'Amour behind the Carolina bench.

Before Edmonton, the former defenseman spent time in the Calgary and Chicago organizations.  The team's press release follows:

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 24, 2014

HURRICANES ADD STEVE SMITH AS ASSISTANT COACH

Former NHL defenseman has five seasons of experience as NHL assistant

RALEIGH, NC – Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with Steve Smith as assistant coach. Smith will join new head coach Bill Peters and assistant coach Rod Brind’Amour behind the Hurricanes’ bench.

"Steve had a solid career as a player and has gained valuable coaching experience with two teams, especially when it comes to working with young defensemen," said Francis.

Smith, 51, served as assistant coach for the Edmonton Oilers for the past four seasons. The Glasgow, Scotland, native had also spent one season as an assistant coach for the Calgary Flames in 1997-98, before returning to the ice as a player for the Flames for three more seasons. Smith also gained experience as a scout with the Chicago Blackhawks prior to joining the Oilers coaching staff.

Selected by the Oilers in the sixth round of the 1981 NHL Draft, Smith played 804 career regular-season NHL games and recorded 375 points (72g, 303a) and 2,139 penalty minutes as a defenseman with Edmonton, Chicago and Calgary. He was a part of three Stanley Cup championship teams with the Oilers, and advanced to the Stanley Cup Final twice more with the Blackhawks, totaling 52 points (11g, 41a) in 134 career playoff games. Smith had three 50-point seasons as a blueliner, including a career-high 57 points (10g, 47a) for Chicago in 1992-93.

Prior to turning professional, Smith played for London of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) from 1980-1983, totaling 20 goals, 83 assists (103 points) and 481 penalty minutes.

The best fifth round draft pick in Florida Panthers history is Jaroslav Špaček

One of the few late-round gems for the Panthers, Jaroslav Špaček is the best fifth round draft pick in Florida Panthers history.

The year was 1998. President Bill Clinton was mired in a sex scandal, Jesse Ventura started his gig as Governor of Minnesota, Google was founded by Sergey Brin and Larry Page, and the Florida Panthers selected the best fifth round draft pick in club history, taking Jaroslav Špaček 117th overall. Born in Rokycany, Czechoslovakia, the big defenseman's NHL career stretched from 1998 to 2012, starting with the Panthers and ending with the Cats' longtime division rival, the Carolina Hurricanes.

Špaček was a bit of a gem for the Panthers, as he was one of very few late round picks that actually turned in a long and productive NHL career. He played 880 games total (157 with Florida) and scored 355 points in that time, along with a +49 rating. He was not the most mobile player on the blue line, but was a great passer and played a very relaxed style of defense, rarely getting rattled. He was also known for his booming point shot, which helped him post 10 goals for Florida in only his second year in the NHL. The Panthers eventually traded him to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for defenseman Anders Eriksson, who played just a single season for the Cats.

He was also a member of the 2005-2006 Edmonton Oilers, who managed to make a Stanley Cup final appearance that season, losing in seven games to the Hurricanes. Špaček was tied with Patrick Marleau, Jason Spezza and Teemu Selanne at 14 points, good for second best among all defensemen in the playoffs, finishing second to teammate Chris Pronger. He would have limited playoff success after that point, playing in the postseason with Buffalo and Montreal, but he would never reach the Cup finals again during the remainder of his NHL career.

Špaček would finish out his pro hockey career overseas, playing one final season in his native Czech Republic for HC Plzen. He became involved in coaching since retirement, assisting with Plzen and eventually suiting up for the club again due to injuries. He was also involved in the IIHF World Championships in 2014, serving as an assistant coach for the Czech team. Spacek will likely continue his coaching work and it would not be surprising to one day see him as an NHL assistant coach, if he decided to return to North America.

Hurricanes Re-Sign LW Chris Terry To One-Year Deal

Hurricanes prospect Chris Terry re-signed with Carolina Tuesday, agreeing to a one-year, two-way deal.

Chris Terry, a fifth-round pick of the Hurricanes in 2007, opted to re-sign with Carolina instead of testing the free agent market on July 1, agreeing to a one-year, two-way deal. The contract will pay Terry $600,000 at the NHL level and $300,000 in the AHL.

Terry, 25, has spent the majority of his five professional seasons with Carolina’s top affiliate — first the Albany River Rats, then the Charlotte Checkers — but has registered a goal and two assists in 13 career games with the Hurricanes. He played 10 games with the Canes in 2013-14. He has been an alternate captain with the Checkers the past two seasons.

Here is the release from the team.

‘CANES AGREE TO TERMS WITH FORWARD CHRIS TERRY
Left wing led Charlotte Checkers in assists in 2013-14

RALEIGH, NC – Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with left wing Chris Terry on a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Terry $600,000 on the NHL level or $300,000 on the American Hockey League (AHL) level in 2014-15.

Terry, 25, played a career-high 10 NHL games in 2013-14, totaling two assists. The Brampton, Ont., native scored the game-winning goal in the shootout for the Hurricanes on Nov. 15 against the Minnesota Wild, and earned his first two NHL assists against Dallas on April 3. Terry spent the majority of the season with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, ranking first among Checkers in assists (41) and shots (230) and second on the team in goals (28) and points (69). He was tied for third in the AHL in power-play points (37), sixth in scoring, tied for 10th in goals and tied for 11th in assists.

Terry (5’10", 195 lbs.) was selected by Carolina in the fifth round, 132nd overall, of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, and has appeared in 13 career NHL games with the Hurricanes, totaling one goal and two assists (3 points). Terry represented the Checkers at the 2012 AHL All-Star Classic and has served as an alternate captain for Charlotte for the past two seasons.

Hurricanes Re-Sign Ron Hainsey to Three-Year Contract

The defenseman was the second player to re-sign with the Canes today, and keeps him off the unrestricted free agent market opening in a week.

Ron Francis' signature pen has been getting a workout today.  Fresh off signing Chris Terry to a new deal, the Hurricanes kept a potential unrestricted free agent off the market by signing Ron Hainsey to a three year, $8.5 million contract.  Hainsey, 33, was the only Canes defenseman to play every game last year, and ate up a ton of ice time while solidifying the Canes' second defensive pairing, mostly alongside Brett Bellemore and John-Michael Liles.

Hainsey joined the team in August of last year after serving as one of the lead NHLPA negotiators during the lockout, and currently is one of five players on the joint NHL/NHLPA competition committee. His signing gives the Canes six NHL defensemen under contract next year, with Mike Komisarek likely to move on and the Canes facing remaining decisions on Bellemore and the injured Joni Pitkanen.

The press release from the team is below.

RALEIGH, NC - Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Ron Hainsey on a three-year contract. The deal will pay Hainsey $3 million for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons and $2.5 million in 2016-17.

Hainsey, 33, was one of two Hurricanes to play in all 82 games during the 2013-14 season, his first with the team. The Bolton, CT, native totaled four goals and 11 assists (15 points) for Carolina, his best scoring totals since the 2010-11 season. Hainsey (6'3", 201 lbs.) ranked second among Hurricanes in blocked shots (124) and third on the team in ice time per game (21:26) last season, and registered an even or better plus/minus rating in 14 consecutive games from Oct. 28-Nov. 27.

Selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the first round, 13th overall, of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Hainsey has totaled 207 points (38g, 169a) and 316 penalty minutes in 673 career NHL games with Montreal, Columbus, Atlanta, Winnipeg and Carolina. He notched his 200th career point with an assist on Riley Nash's goal against Nashville on Dec. 2, 2013. A product of the United States National Team Development Program, Hainsey spent two seasons at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell prior to turning professional. He has represented the United States at four major international tournaments: the 2009 IIHF World Championship, 2000 and 2001 World Junior Championships and 1999 U-18 World Junior Championship.
